Why the Heck Would Anyone
Want to Operate Digital Voice?
Produced June 5, 2013
'Click the Pig'
The title of this episode is just click-bait, just there to get attention. Host KN4AQ is a supporter, and expects DV to become a primary voice-ish mode as time goes by, both on HF and VHF/UHF. Guests Mel Whitten K0PFX and Bruce Perens K6BP are unabashed evangelists.
The arguments for and against are already old and tired. This program moves the conversation forward. Be warned: it's long. Two parts, each about an hour. You'll get your money's worth.
Bruce came up with the notion of Open Source, and evangalized CODEC2. He's not a D-STAR fan (or P25, MotoTRBO, etc.). He expects any DV mode that relies on a proprietary component to fall to new, open technology. And it's not just a pipe-dream over the horizon somewhere. At Dayton, he and his partners had a booth in the main Arena promoting FreeDV: free, sound-card based software that'll add DV to any stable SSB radio. And they had a prototype of the HT of the Future – sort of an Android phone on ham frequencies running ham apps, and any mode (analog or digital) you want to program into it. He says it'll be a real product next year!
